A Monkey’s Welcome
Driving into the game reserve was a beautiful sight, with the rivers and mountains creating the perfect backdrop for a gorgeous weekend retreat. As we drove in we were lucky to see blesbok and warthog running next to the vehicle, giving us a total sense of being in the bush! All guests arrive at Kariega River Lodge where they receive a delicious welcome drink on the deck overlooking the river. While relaxing on the deck, we were ambushed by some cheeky monkeys who took delight in stealing our sachets of sugar! After our drinks, we were met by our guide Wayne who took us to Settlers Drift on a boat. The boat ride was an adventure itself! The smooth river rippled gently as we cruised down it, the chirping of birds all around us. The boat ride is definitely a bird enthusiast’s treat – we saw a number of diverse bird species including water birds. As we arrived at Settlers Drift we were immediately ushered into a waiting safari vehicle and taken deeper into the bush. We caught a glimpse of the approaching lodge from the mountain’s edge.
